Maree Rowland - What is Autism
Below is a copy of Maree's presentation and themes that ran through her whole presentation.
- State the obvious,
- if he has not seen it he has not heard it,
- pictures are worth a thousand words
- use commands avoid questions,
- always use visuals,
- build many breaks into their day,
- make change a good thing by using change up's,
- timers are key make sure to use visual timers so they can see time fly by.
- Calendars in the home are just as important as in school.
- Social stories Carol Gray, They are the eyes and ears for the student. "I'm going to be your eyes" it is about describing an event, stay away from "I". Call your story a question, so your description is about answering the question. "tell me one thing about.....", At the end you can throw in 1 "I will try...." for relievers ..what are 5 things you can tell the babysitter.
